U-blox introduces 1.8-volt gps modules

u-blox has unveiled two low-voltage GPS modules, the NEO-5D and NEO-5G, which are the first GPS modules to operate at 1.8 Volts, as opposed to 3 Volts, according to the Swiss manufacturer.

Cea to found discussion group on industry standards for handhelds

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has announced the formation of a discussion group to weigh interest in establishing industry technical standards for portable and handheld devices, such as MP3 players, GPS devices, video displays, and cameras. The trade association will hold a Discovery Group meeting to consider the issue at its Industry Forum on October 21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

Shipments of portable navigation devices (PNDs) in the United States almost doubled in the second quarter (Q2) of this year at 3.7 million units, compared to the 2.8 million units in Q2 2007, but prices are still dropping, according to market research firm Canalys.

Magellan Navigation, Inc., of Santa Clara, California, announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell the Magellan consumer products division to MiTAC International Corp. of Taiwan. Closing of the transaction is anticipated in January of 2009. Financial terms were not disclosed.
